CCIS MI errors 44, 45 and 46 - name fields contain illegal characters

What to do if you see CCIS MI errors 44, 45 or 46, which are triggered when Given Name, Family Name, or Middle Name fields contain numbers or special characters.

From Core+ version 26.1, three new error checks have been added to the CCIS MI tool to align with updated NCCIS validation rules. These errors apply to the Compulsory Education and Post 16 Activity sections of the CCIS MI tool.

Given Name

Given Name contains one or more illegal characters.

Error 45

Family Name

Family Name contains one or more illegal characters.

Error 46

Middle Name

Middle Name contains one or more illegal characters.


Error triggers

These errors are triggered when a name field contains any of the following illegal characters:

/ \ : ? @ $ & * ( ) { } [ ] ! " + = |

Numbers 0–9 are also treated as illegal in these fields.


Resolve the errors

To resolve these errors, you will need to correct the affected young person's name record:

  1. Go to the Young Person record that is generating the error.

  2. Review the Given Name, Family Name, and Middle Name fields for any numbers or special characters listed above.

  3. Remove or replace the illegal characters with valid name data.

  4. Once corrected, re-run your MI submission for the relevant month to confirm the errors are cleared.
